I can imagine this as a scenario cobbled together from various bits of information. First, the whole 2012 Mayan Long Count thing. Next one has to look for some astronomical event happening around then, preferably a portent of doom. Now the next bit ... There is a Japanese space mission by the name of Hayabusa, an ion engine powered spacecraft that orbited the asteroid (25143) Itokawa for a while and made two attempts to land on the surface and collect samples of material. The spacecraft was damaged in the second attempt and was unable to follow the original flight plan which would have had it returning to the vicinity of the Earth in June 2007 and dropping the sample canister onto the vast stretches of the Woomera Rocket Range in Central Australia. However, flight controllers have managed to regain control of the spacecraft and its ion engines were turned on in earnest on April 25, 2007 with the aim of returning to Earth in 2010 and dropping the sample canister to Woomera.

So my take is that "wormera" is a corruption of Woomera, the comet refers to the asteroid (25143) Itokawa and the reference to China or Japan is actually to Hayabusa.

(PS: Woomera is an aboriginal word for a spear-thrower)

Sheesh, people are coming up with all kinds of bull to predict the end of the world in 2012. They're are going to feel awfully stupid on January 1, 2013.

Of course, then they'll just mark their calendars for the next date that some fruitcake says we're all going to die.

the current 2012 hype is because of the ancient mayans being to lazy to continue their calendar beyond 2012.

No, I don't believe so. I can't find anything about that on the Internet. If it were true, I would imagine that it would be a bigger deal.
