I am not alone in this extravagant assessment; it is shared by every American Noble Laureate in Literature. The greatest writer in the English language is Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938); so say Saul Bellow, William Faulkner, Sinclair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck.

My favourite author right now is Lillian Jackson Braun. She writes the Cat Who mystery books. I also like Jannette Oak, Beverly Lewis, and Lori Wick.

Fantasy - Terry Pratchett
Scinece fiction - Isaac Asimov
Historical - Bernard Cornwell
Non-fiction - Alasdair MacIntyre
None of the above however can come even remotely close to James Joyce. Read 'Portrait of an Artist' and then try to say you don't agree.

Howard Spring. I know nobody is familiar with his writing these days, and his books are all out of print, as far as I know, but he writes beautifully. 'The Houses In between' contains some of the most beautiful prose ever written, and it's a lovely story. Check 2nd hand book shops or charity shops for his work, it's worth the effort.
Somebody just agreed with me! Make yourself known please, we could start a campaign for intelligent literature!
