No, it's far from too late since you've seen the first five movies. There's so much left out of, or changed in, the movies (especially the last three) that the only way for you to get the actual story is to read the books. Take Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire for example. In Goblet of Fire how is it Harry, a fourth year, actually knew enough magic to compete with three people who were three years older than hes was? The movie doesn't go into how much training Harry had to do to compete, it pretty much is just concerned with the Triwizard Cup events. And in Prisoner of Azkaban the Three Broomsticks isn't open to students in the movie. But that's not the case in the book, there it's open to pretty much any witch or wizard and Ron and Hermione hide Harry under the table when Fudge, Hagrid, MacGonagall, Flitwick showed up.
And yes, the first book is good.

You should start reading them. It is never to late. The movies don't give all the details of the book so there will still be suprises and stuff. The first one is great!!!! The 5 books and up and the 4th ones look a little long but while you are reading them you don't want them to stop!!! You want to go into their world, it is sooooo good!!!!!

Go for it! But be preared to start liking the movies less and less as you enjoy the books more and more. In the books the characters come to life and you start to think of them as real people. Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger become real. In the movies they're just actors, and that is all they will ever be. In the books, plots are more deeply winded and revealed. You will start to realize the books are so much better then the movies and there is so much more in them!

i didn't read any of the books until right before the goblet of fire (4)...i hadn't had the interest...but my family had every one, so being a reader of all things, i just started. it was probably less than a month from the book release, and let's just say i had my copy reserved and was there at midnight after waiting impatiently for at least 2 full weeks. once you start, you can't stop. it's why the series is so appealing and popular, it's written for all to enjoy.
also, the books are much more detailed than the movies. i always like to watch them, nut they leave so many important things out! read read read and you will like the extra info you get from the books.
happy reading!

I say go for it! Though the books and movies obviously follow the same main story, the books have SO much more in them that the movies leave out. Even though you know the stories of the first 5 books, (i'm assuming you enjoyed them all), you'll like the books even better. The first one IS great, they all are. I say you totally should do it. ;)

No I don't think it is too late. But it kinda ruins the ending of them all though. Try Reading Charlie Bone, it is way better than Harry potter. In my opinion.

You might as well read all the books if you want to. All of the movies were shortened anyway because the books were "too long". I highly reccomend you read the series.
Oh, and the first book is okay, but it gets better as the series moves on.
