My ex boss is screwing me over big time. I was originally granted benefits ( I got laid off) and then my ex boss wrote the them and told them that he called me back to work. He didn't, he is lying. So now they have denied me future benefits and want me to pay back what I recieved. I am appealing now, but I want to try and win the case. It seems that the Unemployment people are taking his work for it.

You can contact law schools if you want, but you may not have any in your area. Besides, most school clinics like that don't do unemployment cases. Your best bet would be to contact these two organizations: the New Jersey Bar (or Bar Association) and your local Legal Aid or Legal Services office. If you qualify financially, Legal Aid usually does unemployment work and will do it at a reduced rate or free. Also, most state bars require attorneys to perform some pro bono or service work each year. Check with the bar directly--they may be able to give you a pro bono referral. Good luck!

best bet is to look to the local law schools for help, not much chance to find a lawyer to help pro-bono in this case

On your case how where you laid off, verbal or written, written will help your case, the date you where laid off and the date claim he offered you new work, was that work the same type of work pay and all?

On the appeal, make sure you either call in the day of the hearing or show up in person failure to do so will result in you loosing

keep everything in order know the date you where laid off, and let them show proof they offered you the same type of work

the term is a non-fraud return of benefits but if you win it will be OK, just can not be found for a voluntary quit which is what the employer is saying with the second offer that you refused, his words

no letter, no phone bill ,no proof.
id ask what day it was get that in writing
then ask for a copy of the phone bill
some businesses pay fro local calls too.

di you ask for a formal emplyment office appeal yet? did oyu ask to see your fiel?

dont say it but see if there is anything in writing other than his word against yours.
then after you asee whats inthe file any witness would be helpful..
get a notirized copy of a letter that you send to the employer and the unemploynment office stating that you never recived a call or the required contract in wriitng..letter from this employer. and ask if the offer still stands.

go or call to the state labor dept a separate group and ask.
maybe this is wrongful termination..

legal aide should help.
or get out the yellow pages.

did they say you can then go back to work? di they say who supposedly called you..?
or telling you while we claim you can.. you also can't?

could it be someone was supposed to call and didn't? causing trouble all around?
