Publisher is super for making professional brochures, ads, letterhead. Just play with the program and learn what does what. If you decide to use Power Point, format is the same for slide layouts as Publisher.
Easy to drop art from file into both. Just put your hands on the machine and learn it. "Help" is confusing to me, but you might get it...
Doing Graphic Art work, we always make a quick, pencil, thumbnail sketch (or ten, ideas flow) then turned that concept into the finished product. Just like in Publisher, we made boxes for picture, boxes for text lay out. Just quick, then perfect.
Have fun.

To do posters and flyers etc you need a Desktop Publishing package. My advice would be to ignore all advice from Y!Answers, and seek out recommended packages from online consumer magazines. People on Y!Answers will only tell you about the programs they like - that doesn't necessarily make them suitable for your particular purpose.
Chances are, there's probably something on your system already.

Microsoft office will give you the full package to play about with, like Microsoft office publisher or frontpage or even project, they are all from Microsoft, you can buy these but if you know someone with the software you can install it on your computer. good luck and have fun
