I am a male who faced the same problem but at a much worse degree....My advice to you is, whoever is engaging in the gossiping arena you need to ignore and not with attitude just a natural ignore the best way to hurt a person I've found out is to become successful , which in turn allows you to rise above all that chaos started by your ex

There could be several reasons. 1. He is hurting and is trying to hurt you back. 2. He feels guilty and is telling everyone a lie to make it look like you were the one responsible for the break-up and not him. 3. He may really believe that the only way that you would leave him is if there was someone else.

The most important thing is what you think and know to be true*... There are always people who choose to believe the worst in people by wanting to put them down and find fault with them*.. By doing so they try to elevate themselves above everyone else*. Those who unjustly slander you or bear false witness against you will live to regret it one day*.. Do not let them push your buttons*. LOL.

If anyone mentions it to you just say, "Yeah, he said he was going to start that rumor awhile back. Guess he did." and drop it.
Like you said, folks that know you, already know you...and folks that don't, well, who cares?
He 's playing the sympathy card. He's absolving himself of any responsibility for the break up. And he's hoping it will get back to some woman. Let it go. She'll figure it out....eventually.

You can get a court order for him for slander and defamation of character. He as adult and he should not be telling people about you. He is just a moron I suppose.
