A pap smear is a test for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is transmitted through sex. Once exposed to the virus, it stays in your body. Currently there are no specific symptoms in men or tests for men exposed to the virus, nor is there any cure, so having a positive Pap test does not mean that he has cheated on you. The reason it is important to get your pap smear done each year is because exposure to HPV can cause cervical cancer. There is a new vaccine called Gardasil that protects against the 4 major types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer or genital warts. It is recommended for women between 12 and 26. I don't know your age, but it would be a good idea for you to talk to your doctor about whether it is right for you.
If your pap smear comes back normal, it means that at this time there are no abnormal changes to the cells of your cervix caused by the papilloma virus. It does not mean that you do not have a different STD. There are many other diseases that are sexually transmitted. Often testing will be done for other kinds of diseases at the same time, such as the bacterial infection Chlamydia. Chlamydia is frequently treated with a simple liquid to drink.
If your doctor has informed you that your pap smear came back normal, and has did not mention any other STDs, either they did not do any other tests, or they probably came back normal as well. Most offices make it a point to inform you when the results come back saying that you need treatment, but might not specifically call you if the testing found no problems.
If you are concerned about contracting STDs, it is important that you protect yourself before that happens. Some STDs like Chlamydia are easy to treat and won't cause any lasting problems if they are caught on time, but it is the exact same behavior that causes a person to get Chlamydia that can cause a person to get HIV and therefore AIDS. You should be sure to use condoms if you are not in a monogamous relationship in which you are certain that you and your partner have no diseases because you have both been tested.

When you get a pap smear you are getting tested for cervical cancer. If it comes back abnormal it means there is some suspicion about you having that form of cancer and you might have to get more tests done.
You get tested for STDs by a blood test. It doesn't mean you have an STD.

When you get a PAP smear they are looking for abnormal cervical cells not looking for a bacteria or an STD.
If you need to be tested for an STD you need to have a blood test. specific for STD's;.

A pap smear is to check for cervical cancer not STD's. The only way you get tested for STD's is if your doctor orders the lab work.

No.having anabnormal pap could mean from having a simple vaginal infection to cervical cancer, usually the doctor will explain to you the grade of abnormality of the cell, sometimes 1,2,or 3 if it comes out with level 3 it means that you are very prone to developing a cancer very soon.If it is under 1 then its just an infection and your obgyn will prescribe some vaginal cream treatment.I came out with level 1 last year when I was pregnant, then last one came our less than 1,I was prescribed dalacin 2% vag.cream,I will go for another check up on December.

Hi hun... Because i have had endometriosis which is a disorder of the ovary, i have probably had more pap smears at the age of 21 than an average woman has in a life time! They do not hurt... can feel uncomfortable though, i think people confuse this with pain. It is over within minutes!! Hope this answers your question!!

Unless you specifically asked to be checked for STDs, your annual pap smear just checks for cervical cancer.

They'd have to check. The pap looks at your cervix, not for STDs. This is the time when they'd take cell samples to check, but it's not a regular part of the checkup. You'd have to ask them to check.
