Also, if you couldn't play Torrey Pines, where would you most like to play in San Diego? I have one day to play.

To clarify: I'd like to know if walking and playing golf is allowed on the Torrey Pines golf courses. You'd be surprised how many golf courses are cart only.

I lived in San Diego for 40+ years and always walked Torrey. I have played both the North and South courses at least 30 times. The South is long, so I would recommend a cart. The North is more scenic with better views of the ocean. I recently moved to Buckeye, AZ just outside of Phoenix and have not been back to San Diego for 7 months. Just call the course or pro shop and ask about the cart policy to be sure.
Now, for an alternative course(s). Cottonwood is good. They have the Monte Vista and Ivanhoe courses there. Ivanhoe is longer. Riverwalk is nice and centrally located in Mission Valley.
Try the Phoenix area. I play Estrella Mountain golf course and it costs $40 for two people and that includes our cart. Played yesterday and it was 116 degrees. Same as my golf score.
Enjoy your stay in San Diego, if only for one day.

Here is the Torrey Pines web site. They have a contact section and should be able to answer your "walking" question. I'll give my buddy in SD an email and get back to you on alternates. (if he gets back to me of course)
Edit:
here is the quote from my buddy in SoCal
From David;
It would be easier to get on Pebble Beach. At least if you throw down $300 for a hotel room the concierge should be able to hook you up. For another $300.
But you piqued my interest since they are playing the U.S. Open there next year.
There are two courses, the North and the South. The South is where the will play the Open and will kick your ***. The fees for the South are $222 on Weekends and $182 on weekdays. The North course is about $40 cheaper. 70% of the times go to residents of San Diego and those are distributed through a lottery system. The other 30% go through brokerages. You can book 90 days in advanced for your foursome. No refunds. Definitely not a walk-on type of course.
San Diego has a **** load of golf courses, but I have not played much down there. I have heard the they have some great courses and decent prices in North County San Diego.
So... Thats the best I can do for you. I hope it helps.

Just walk straight north up the beach. Do you know how long of a walk that is?? It's way too far for anyone I know to walk that's for sure. Maybe on a map it doesn't look that far but trust me it is. If you live here you should know how to walk north and stay between the water and the hwy 101.
