I don't think there is a specific running in period any more, the suggestion is that you don't go mad for the first 500 miles, you used to have to run a car in at 30mph for 500 miles, people used to put notices in the back window saying 'running in, please pass'

Follow your manufacturers service book. First service will probably be between 600 and 1000 miles dependant on make, this is usually free and gets rid of the manufacturing gunge.Failure to keep to their recommendations will invalidate your warranty.
Generally by the time you have done 3000 miles the car should be at its optimum.
Sorry still work in MPH and feet and inches.

All modern engines are now 'run in' on a test bench at the factory before fitting and don't need running in on the road.
The old maxim of 500 miles at blah blah and the next 1,000 miles at blah blah, no longer applies.
Just don't cane it whilst it's still new!!

Usually you have to do around 1500 km before the car is "run-in" - i.e. you can safely use the full rev range of the engine without risk of damage.
However, many car engines slowly improve in performance/efficiency for a long time after that. I have about 48,000 miles (about 77,000 km) on my car, and the average fuel consumption is still increasing gradually.

new cars gets better with use
performance fuel consumption will improve
it will be after 3000 miles 5000km before you get the best from your engine
it could be much longer 20-30000km even
there is not hard and fast rule as to the time your engine reaches it's optimum
