It will not affect the heat, however if it is not working it can have an affect the "defroster" operation. On many vehicles,Jeeps come to mind you will hear the compressor kicking in when the heater controls are set on defrost. What it is doing is acting like dehumidifier.

No. The only thing the air conditioning compressor is used for is....air conditioning. The heater has nothing to do with it.

No just the A/C heat goes through the heater coil

yes, it will affect the defroster but not the heat as it's used to help defrost the windows, it will take forever to defrost your windows in the winter without it working.
