Hiccups are caused by muscular spasms of the diaphragm--that large muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen and helps you breathe. It is controlled mainly by the vagus nerves which run from your neck, down along your throat to spread out to the muscle. If you have irritation in the base of your esophagus, that can then cause inflammation, or rubbing on that vagus nerve, which will trigger repeated or prolonged bouts of hiccups.

Likewise, an occasional episode of hiccups can be interrupted by things that stimulate a sudden rapid firing from the vagus nerve. That is what nearly all the home remedies are aimed at trying to produce.

My personal favorite is swallowing a spoonful of peanut butter (without chewing it) that has been mixed with extra sugar. It's had a high success rate for my family, its pretty easy to do, ingredients are ready at hand, & has a low "mess factor." Drink a glass of water afterward, if it feels like it 'didn't all go down completely.' If you are allergic to nuts, substitute anything that is very thick and pasty and a little difficult to swallow whole, but not likely that you would actually choke on it. (Bite of well cooked oatmeal?? I've never test run this, though, the sticky factor may play a role, too.)

There are even special physical maneuvers and intravenous medications that a trained physician can use to stimulate this nerve in severely prolonged cases of hiccups. Some people have had them last for weeks and even years. Check out Guiness World Records on that!

About 9 months ago, I saw this episode of a show on TLC...I think it was Trauma: Life in the ER.....where this girl had been hiccuping for 8 days straight. They tried every "remedy" they had ever heard of, but nothing worked. Finally, they learned of a different remedy where you push with your hands on your forehead between your eyebrows...and it worked! The next time I had the hiccups, I ended up trying this...and it has worked every time. In fact, I just had the hiccups a few minutes ago and stopped them by doing this.

To describe more clearly what you do, I put pressure towards the middle of my forehead (about where my eyebrows stop). I either use two hands, pressing with my fingertips where each eyebrow stops. Or, I just use one hand, pressing with the palm of my hand between my eyebrows. I usually hold it there for as long as it takes to not feel that urge to hiccup....which is about 10-15 seconds.

Hopefully, this will help you and others out.

Hiccups are short contractions of the diaphragm or large muscle dividing the chest from the absomen, resulting in crowing or gasping sounds. The cause is not known, but certain nerve pathways seem to be irritated. This may occur due to swallowing of hot foods or some disorder of the stomach, esophagus or pancreas. In some cases peritonitis may be responsible.
Hiccups are sometimes seen in typhoid and also in amoebic infections. Liver diseases may also cause hiccups, and attacks may even occur during pregnancy, , probably due to bladder irritation. Hiccups are associated with pleurisy, pneumonia, uraemia and drunkenness. Hiccups may also occur due to fast eating with the chance of swallowing air, or eating too much foods causing irritation of the diaphragm.
Most hiccups disappear after some time on their own, but a few people have had cases that lasted for years.

I have found that if I take a tablespoon of A-1 Steak Sauce by mouth, it'll cure most of my hiccups.

I drink a glass of water through a straw while holding my ears. A nurse once told me about it, something about "equalizing pressure". I don't know if that's the case but it works for me. There is also a product called the Hic-Cup for more severe cases. I saw that on the Today show when they had the girl that had them for months on.
