I couldn't agree more. I am not particularly fond of hip hop or the artists that sing it (e.g. 50 Cent). However, I must point out that you only listened to the absolutely terrible songs if you get the general impression that is that extreme. They talk fast to background music, and some songs don't rhyme. Technically, is it music, but it is one of the lowest forms. And what's even lower are the singers of it who are negative-minded. There are good (in both senses of the word) hip-hop artists out there whom have good music and lyrics, but they are becoming harder to find. However, old-school hip hop (from the '90s, etc.) is completely different. For example, Will Smith was good in his days of music.

I love rap music, but I can see where you are coming from. But if you ask me, some rock music is just a bunch of screaming and is just out of control. The only rock group that I like is Linkin Park. I think that rap is music because everyone doesn't have the rap skill to freestyle off the top of the head.

See you must all understand that African American people invented music in America, Jazz to be exact. Then Rock n Roll was another genre of music which united Whites and Blacks and was appreciated by both races. Rock Music was mostly white. Rap is a different kind of music invented by Blacks in the Bronkx in the mid 70's. They invented it, they dominate it, they know what music is. I advise you guys to shut up regarding music coz they invented it. It is like France taking about American football as crap. Well Americans don't appreciate that, so i think you are wrong.
If you don't like my answer Mr.Crappy, I would suggest you to get ouuta here.smartkid uh?what a dumb piece of crap!

I think it is a fallacy to try to exclude a genre or type of creative expression from your definition of "art" or "music" simply because you don't like it. As another answerer pointed out, rap does fit the technical definition of music. As for whether it's *good* music, that's both a matter of opinion and a matter of the individual artist being discussed. While I don't find myself getting into most rap and hip-hop, I find some of it distinctly enjoyable, and occasionally find a rapper - Brother Ali is a good example - who has really wonderful, inspiring rhymes.

Ultimately, this is just a subsection of that bewildering and unanswerable question "what is art?" Who knows? Who cares?

Today's rap does sound very bad but before basicly 2000 rap music was a way to describe the struggle they've gone through when they were growing up like drug abuse, being in real gangs, have one or no parents. Now I would understand why you think rap is not music because so call rappers these days are talking talk about the same stuff like having every girl, ballin,Hustlin, pimpin, mostly every word w/ in in it. But if you hear ol skool rap it would be completly different.

What music are you listening to that doesnt have the words rhyme?
If you think they are talking fast and saying nothing then you are listening to slow or listening to the wrong rappers.

Music is an art form consisting of sound and silence expressed through time. Elements of sound as used in music are pitch (including melody and harmony), rhythm (including tempo and meter), and sonic qualities of timbre, articulation, dynamics, and texture.

Rap is speaking on a beat, basically the same as the definition above.

Why is there so much hate on this section? Rock must be boring.

your screenname says imsmartkid but i think you should change it to imanidiot because for anyone to seriously think rap isnt music they have to be dumber than paris hilton. rap is music because words and melody are used to express emotion and thats exactly what all other kinds of "music" do. just because it doesnt go la di da di da doesnt mean it isnt music.
