I have decided that I want to be a lawyer when I grow up. I tried researching the different types of lawyers, but I'm still not sure what the difference between some is. I am interested in the type of lawyer that defends either a criminal or the person or state accusing someone of a crime.

Please someone tell me the difference between prosecuters, civil lawyers, and criminal lawyers, what they do, and maybe even salaries.

A prosecuter is like a District Att. ( they fight to put people in jail. they work for the state or federal goverment) They will do nething to put you away.

Civil Lawyers work on civil cases like car wrecks, land disputes, small claims etc..

Criminal Lawyers work only criminal cases they oppose the DA or prosecutors in cases in other words if you get arrested for theft or so on you will have to get a criminal lawyer to defend you.

The answer as to the "difference" is in what you get from the legal action taken. In Civil court you are are entitled to civil damages. Such as pain, suffering, past and future medical expenses and wages lost (those are the basics) and this is awarded in the form of money payments by the trier of fact assuming you met your burden of proof. The penalty for a criminal case can be a fine or loss of liberty (jail time). The next big difference is what is the litigant's burden of proof. In a civil action it is proven by a preponderance of the evidence (51% in your favor and you win) and in a criminal action it must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt (you are sure they did it). Also, you should note that only the state can prosecute for a crime, in some instances a "special prosecutor" can be named by the Congress to investigate allegations (Ken Star and Clinton comes to mind), In a civil action the Plaintiff hires a lawyer to file suit or they can act Pro Se and bring suit themselves. (not however recommended since the court expects you to know the law) Lastly, It may be a trick question because in law, assault is a crime causing a victim to fear violence (note no contact). The term is often confused with battery, which is the actual offensive "touching"of a person. If it is a contact sport you are discussing a battery is usually waived by the players consent since they know they are going to be hitting each other. Only in extreme cases such "unnecessary roughness" might the mutual consent be waived i.e. a players neck is fractured by an illegal or brutal hit then all bets are off call the lawyers.

Criminal attorneys handle cases of broken laws; civil attys handle suits or disputes between two or more parties, not necessarily involving broken laws; prosecutors try to convict suspected law breakers; defense attorneys try to defend those same suspects.
