Upgrading is a possibility, especially if the chassis is in good shape. Or if you don't want to keep it around, you can donate it to a charitable organization like Goodwill or the Salvation Army, or donate it to a local school in need.

Some you trash, others you can sell, and still others you can keep and set up as linux servers or firewalls. It's your preference...

Most people just get rid of them.

The most effective use they can have, is setting them up as an actual firewall box, that filters hack attacks against your main computer... You really have to know what you are doing to do this though.

You can also donate it to charity if it works.

Clear off any personal or private information, and donate them. Maybe you know someone who has kids and could use a computer to play games on and keep them entertained.

Or, if you really feel like it. Take it outside, and take a baseball bat to it. Maybe it will help relieve stress. ;)

In the case of ours they move down to one of the kids - the slowest machine upstairs is a pentium 3 so the kids are happy and don't try to hog my machine !
The oldest machines go to the charity shop.
