Most rail about stereotypes or generalizations, but are they allowed if they are possitive? If you say "Southern Hospitality" or "brilliant Greek architecture" or "flawless African diamonds" is it okay or taboo?

Honestly, I think we've gone way overboard on this. I think its a fact of life that we're going to make generalizations, and its further a fact of life that we're going to offend someone with our generalizations.

The point is, if we're aware that it offends, we shouldn't do it.

What about things that could be either positive OR negative:

"Southern Drawl" for example. Is this positive or negative? Depends.

Not okay, even if good. Generalizations are not based on facts but on opinions. A person should always look at the facts when deciding how to feel or what to think about a situation.

Also, southern hospitality is a cliche, not a generalization.

I wouldn't call it taboo, but generalizations are not good no matter what, positive or negative they are just not accurate representation of reality and they mislead people to believe things that are not true.

no..not ok...not all black have the "gift" not all diamonds in africa are flawless.-trust me on that one.....and not all southeners are hospitable...it puts people in a box and they also believe that is where they belong...they can aspire to do anything outside of their box....

no they are not all good. there are some people who fit under a certain sterotype (positive too) and if they do not match that sterotype they are labeled as not being part of what they really are.

No, even positive generalizations are still generalizations, and still misleading.

Nope... my friend's Asian, she said in school everyone would ask her to help them with homework assuming she was super smart, it really bothered her.

So, if generalizations are not good - why do many liberals HATE conservatives just because they are conservative??
