I know that there must be 36 inches between the toilet and the wall it faces, but what if there is a door on that wall that swings into the bathroom? Must there be a certain clearance between the open door and toilet?

I have not heard of a code for that or the 36" rule you mentioned. Only minimum distance restrictions I know of is 15" from the center of the toilet to a wall or cabinet on either side.

the min distance requiered from center of toilet drain to any obstruction on either side is 15", from the front edgeof toilet to any obstruction you must have a min of 18 " clear space .
Now if you r looking for ADA measurment that's different you'll need 18" from center to the wall on one side and 32 " min on the othe wall with a min 32" clear up front
