Book.
I've often watched films after I've read the book and been disappointed the characters don't look like how I imagined them to.

Reading the book I thing is always better. A lot more detail and you can be taken on mad trips by the writer, Iv read my share of books and then seen the film and I v alwas been let down by the films. READ THE BOOK first then you deside that iam right.
Excpet 4 the Godfather, that was one of the best films 2 come from a book. The book as well was GREAT. I v read it 8 or 9 times to date.

Read the book. With the book, your imagination takes over and you create the world in your own way. You have your own thoughts on the characters appearances and in essence, its your world.

With film, you are limited to what you are told the world looks like and what the characters wear. Its much more limited than a book, where the only limit is your imagination.

Often, book to film adaptations often miss out big chunks of the book as the films would be about six hours long in some cases.

This depends on the book and film as they can vary.
A prime example is "The perfect storm" by Sebastian Junger.
If you read the original 1997 version of the book you will find it is a different story to the film and indeed to the book of the film. The original story gives a lot of food for thought, whereas the film version and the book of the film is, well as i said full of errors.

Read the book, I've never been dissapointed in a book, but the movie never really gets to me like a book will.
I guess the best movie that came from a book that I've read was the Divine secrets of the YaYa sisterhood. Though the movie left out alot of the book...the actor line up was great, I adore sandra bullock and ashley judd among some of the others.

I suggest you read a book first. If that same book is then done as a film, you will be able to see how it has been changed and altered to fit the cinema screen. The best example I know is the book 'Gone With The Wind'. When the film came out, many chapters were missing and others tinkered with to fit the parameters of a film.It is always best to read a book first.

I would have to say the book.Once you've read the book and you see the movie you will notice all the stuff that the movie left out from the book. But if you don't like reading the movie will do you good, it's not that big of a difference it's just the little details they leave out.

The book. The "theatre" inside your head is always better. And besides I don't know of many screenwriters who can leave a book alone without changing it--especially kids' books.

The one exception I have found so far is Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." The book is poorly developed and the end makes me think she was writing to a deadline and just rushed it through. The film was excellent, much better than the book.

I think its better to read the book but then sometimes I don't enjoy the film as much, as I expect too much of it. If you watch the film first then its more difficult to imagine the characters yourself when you read the book!

Depends on which book! If it's Harry Potter than I read and then watch, if it's Lord of the Rings I don't read but...no wait, I don't watch either (boring!). Try reading first if it appeals to you because you get the initial idea, like with the Da Vinci Code...wasn't impressed at all by the movie!
