on the poor/middle class?
In order to generate the same amount of revenue as the current tax plan, you will have to increase the taxation on the poor and middle class by a substantial amount.

MrCool Ukraine has a 13% flat tax, that would NEVER generate the same income as the current US tax plan.
USA might need a 30% or higher flat tax.

just look at the current US income distribution to understand why such a low % would not work here

I'm a Democrat and I support a flat tax Your theory that the wealthy would benefit from this is way off base,(or we would have had a flat tax implemented years ago). Everyone should pay tax's, we all take advantage of the same things our tax's go to, why some not pay? by percentage the less you make, the less you pay, and the more you make the more you pay! It's so simple...........the only real problem with this is the fact that we would no longer need half the lawyers out there..........oh wait did I say that was a problem? really though it's a total over hall of our system because we would throw out the current tax code for a simple " here's how much you made, and this is your tax " no CPA's but also there are a HUGE amount of subsidies built into our tax code like "the earned income credit" these have to go away.

Not true.
Lee jeans $11 tax at 10% $1.10
True Religion $250 tax at 10% $25
When the rich have more money, they will spend it. We do not live in a vacuum.
The flat tax system works well in every country that uses it.
30% ????? Look at last quarter's consumer spending 10% would provide just fine with a flat 17% income tax.
Univee- The waiter doesn't benefit? The cooks? The dishwashers? The equipment repairman? The food and beverage distributers? The farmers? The vinards? The truckers who bring the food in? The sales tax generated? The landlord? The cleaning company? The advertising agency? Local publications? Office supply stores? Equipment manufacterers? etc etc etc.

mymadsky: when the rich have more money they spend it on things that don't benefit society as a whole.
Sure, they go out to las palmas and spend four hundred dollars a plate on a meal that's worth 10 dollars, but other than the owner of that restaurant no one else benefits. Thiis but a single example, but there are many.
What the rich do not do is shop in your local stores, buy your local products, support your local enterprises. They may in fact give up some of their money to charities, usually for tax purposes, but the spending of the rich has no known benefit to the rest of us. If you can find such a benefit, and not just the gerneral assertion, I will listen to this Ayn Randian viewpoint.
regerugged: just flat out lying doesn't contribute much to a discussion. You say the so-called poor do not pay income tax. What planet are you from? I know from personal experience. I went from making a decent salary three years ago to making close to no salary for the last two years. If you make as little as a thoudand dollars in the course of a year you MUST pay taxes. And trust me, they enforce that much more rigidly than they enforce the taxes on corporations.

The so-called poor and lower middle classes do not pay federal income tax, now. Any tax they pay in the future would be a burden.
Russia has a 13% flat tax. The best thing about it: the people are paying their taxes.
I personally prefer a universal sales tax.

Oh lord, where do I begin?? Yeah. Of course we do. But that's sort of the point. Why should approximately half of the American workforce pay the taxes for themselves AND the other half? Why should I pay YOUR share of the taxes? And what do I get for contributing to the lion's share of the tax burden in OUR country and paying YOUR share of taxes? I get the ungrateful resentment of that 'poor and middle class' for my generous contribution on their behalf and a congress that spends like a pack of drunken sailors trying to hand out more to the non-tax paying constituency. If folks contributed to the financial running of this country they'd have a whole lot more interest in how OUR congress spends MY money.
In my opinion, if you don't pay income tax, you shouldn't be allowed to vote. You have no stake in the decisions affecting OUR country.

They probably know that, and don't care.
Tell them it will probably increase THEIR taxes, though, and suddenly they'll pay attention.
