Of course Bill Gates is a founder of Microsoft. However, there is one incident that in this writers opinion was the reason for all of his wealth.

When IBM contracted with him to write the DOS operating system, he insisted on retaining the rights to the product. In one of the dumbest business decisions of all time, IBM agreed. Microsoft went on to license millions of copies of MSDOS (pre windows operating system), and continued the dominance with Windows.

Without the rights to DOS, he has no capital, and Microsoft remains a tiny nitch company.

The rest is history

He was willing to sign on the dotted line with IBM to supply DOS for the first IBM PC and the rest was history. Story goes, IBM approached Gary Kildall the CP/M developer first, but his lawyer wanted too many changes. They then went to Gates, who had lots of IBM shares from his rich banker granddaddy. He bought a CP/M clone from another developer and renamed it. Then Gates renamed the IBM "PC-DOS" to "MS-DOS" and sold it to competitors. Microsoft had grown so quickly they were able to split with IBM after it had paid for the development of OS/2. Gates renamed it "Windows NT". Because Gates sold his products to any manufacturer, unlike Apple and IBM, Microsoft's market share grew to the $300 Billion company it is today, and Bill Gates owns $27 Billion of it.

Great question.
He invented Windows operative system, and it means that EVERY single person usin a PC computer MUST buy his product. That is why he is so wealthy. The FUNNY thing about it all is that he got wealthy copying the windows system that MACINTOSH invented and that, still today, is 1000 times BETTER than Windows.
