I am "sensitive" to heavy perfumes, colognes and pesticides. My employer is aware of this. While I know she has no control over clients who visit our office, she does have control over the spraying of deodorants by janitorial staff.

She has just had the janitor spray our office from top to bottom and I am getting sick from it. I reminded her of my sensitivity. Her response was - oh, well he has sprayed this before. Maybe he has - but never when I am in the office. Not even an apology. My head is throbbing and my eyes are watering from this. Suggestions? What would you do? (Can't go home - I need all the hours I can get)

Talk to your boss again!!! Show her how it is affecting you. Ask her to ask her janitorial staff to spray when everyone is out of the building. If you are a good employee, she will want to accomodate you.
If not, find another job first, and then quit this one.

If I were you, I might see if this sensitivity relates to an allergy.
The problem here is that bosses are very used to people complaining, whining, in the workplace. To implant change, you need to try and avoid falling into this stereotype. Otherwise they won't take you seriously.
You might seem less like just a whiner to your boss if you had a note explaining your condition from a doctor.
There are also many over the counter medications that can help with this sensitivity.
Also, try writing a professional request that this deodorant not be sprayed in your presence, and emphasize the appreciation you will have if it could be avoided as a situation again. Also write how it is detrimental to your work and productivity, and how you look forward to doing your best at work. (that part will prevent the whining sound, too)

Good Luck!

Get your physician to write a note explaining your sensitivity to the spraying, and requesting that you be notified before hand about the use of these sprays.

I am allergic to dust so I do understand. Can you get moved to another area? Maybe you need a job with a better employer

Tell the janitor to stop spraying your office. If your boss won't do anything then ask the janitor.

You have more than one solutions. You can take your day braek while spraying the shop or you can go to the doctor to find a solution for you. If not, you can leave this work and find one freer from spray

i have a suggestion you can see if they have a material safety data sheet available and see if they have any signs or symptoms on it. in our store my mom owns we have them for all of the stuff we sell and if theres a spill or someones alergic to it , it has directions on it so get with the janator and ask him if he has any non alrgetic spray that would smell just as good as what he has. but i would go to the doc tommorow and bring the sheet in and tell him you have a reaction to it.

She's not being very nice and you need to let her know that you are seriously offended by this smell and it's making you ill and if she insists on ignoring your sensitivities then you're going to file workmans comp. They HATE that!
