My Girl friend recently purchased a new laptop and we installed windows Vista on it. We have been having problems with the DVD RW. at first it disappeared and i fixed some things in the registry and that fixed that deleted some files using regedit. Today ive been trying to burn a DVD using Nero and other software and when i came to the burning it spits out my DVD and says please insert a empty DVD R/RW. I tried 3 different disks (From different company's) all of which worked fine in her fathers PC. The laptop just kept rejecting them any idea whats wrong?

Maybe it's because of the discs. The cheaply made ones are not going to work really well.

If you didn't use to much alcohol you might try a specialized cleaning kit (usually an audio CD with little brushes on it). If that doesn't work it might be a software problem so if possible try it on another laptop or do a clean install of your OS (if the PC can see the install disk this should fix it). If that doesn't work you can also try updating the firmware on your device (usually you will get detailed information about this on the manufacturers website). If that doesn't work ... I'm sorry but i think it's time for an upgrade (maybe you can get an HD-DVD:D).

Vista has compatibility problems. Check the website for a new Vista driver for your DVD rw. Any of the newer computers can use either dvd+ or dvd-, so I don't think that is an issue. I think Vista is the culprit.

Do you have the right kind of DVD R disks?

There are DVD -R and DVD +R. Unless you have a drive that can handle either you need the correct type.

when a disk is in, go to my computer, click on the disk (prolly D: drive) and right click on it- then format the disk, it will say you lose all data, but if its blank, you don't have any anyways, then try writing, and when you get done, you might have to make it compatible, unless your program does it for you

I waited a few days to let the burner rest then tried again
