Lisa Ling has done many reports about this and it appears that it is vastly different.

"Lisa took her camera crew inside a burn ward to meet women who are victims of "bride burning." Women don't usually talk freely about being burned by their husbands when their families can't pay dowries, because they fear being killed. Many women say they are burned because of a stove burst, but that is usually far from the truth. On any given day, at least three or four women are admitted to this hospital with more than half of their bodies burned. Lisa said the stench of their flesh was overwhelming and the sound of their pain was heartbreaking. "From the second I walked into this room, I felt like I was in a place where a war had struck," Lisa says. "The fact is that many of them will not live to leave the hospital, and this happens everyday."

What happens to the survivors? Says Donna Fernandes, who works with the women's organization Vimochana that works with the burn victims, "You become a burden, you become a nuisance. You feel not accepted by the family, the husband, not by society." (1)

It's the same as in America/Canada. The richer, more educated women are valuable to their families and society, so they are treated well. However, the poverty-stricken, uneducated baby machines are not valued because they aren't seen as an asset to their communities.
Just like in America, people don't really respect the woman who cleans their home, but treat a female attorney/engineer/medical professional like a goddess.
Surprisingly, a third-world country like India has had more women in governmental power than America has. Huh, go figure. I guess Americans like to talk to the big equality talk, but don't like walking the walk. Even in the 21st century.

Women are treated equally as men are in India now. It's not like wat u think. India has changed a lot now. Well, in some places of India like those villages, women are still treated like **** but it has been eradicated to a big level now. Women frm all walks of life work to strive to make India a better coutry. With all the education and westernization in India, it's not like how it used to be. Women are free to do anything they wanna. And if u get info frm the media, pls be aware that the media only shows the negative side of India
