They don't it just appears that way as they are in the custody of the state, and so the burden of care on the government to them is greater.

I agree, blame the liberals. Cable Tv, free schooling, trade schools, books, 3 meals a day, hot showers, "activity time", free medical care---most of those criminals live a better life in prison than they did on the streets...thanks to our tax dollars..

They don't. It's just that the rights of someone accused of a crime are in need of protection. You right against self-incrimination, for instance, is yours, even if you never commit a crime, and are never asked to incriminate yourself. No one's tried to violate your right, you haven't had to invoke the constitution in it's defense, but you still have it. OTOH, if you're arrested, your 5th-Amendment rights are suddenly much more prominent.

Because Amnesty International and the ACLU want prisoners to be able to fatten themselves on the finest French cuisine as well as being able to chug a whole bottle of 17th Century French Wine every single day.
