(For example: how would I find a zoo, etc. that had bongos or quolls, or norwhals, preferably in North America?) Could there be a list of zoos and their holdings itemized? I did a web search and was not lucky enough (Assoc. of Zoological parks and Aquariums was close) Thanks

Your best bet is isis.org which is more or less an online site where zoos keep track of what they have. However with you not working in at zoo your access will be limited on the site.

If that does not help you might want to do just a general search on google or yahoo. For example "bongo zoo collection". That will more often ping back resluts that would be helpful as well.

Also, most zoos now on their webpage will list out what animals they have. Not exact numbers, but more so a general species list of what can be found.

If you need help finding a few animals let me know, I might be able to help. Feel free to email me.

You could just try searching for the animal separately ("zoos with quolls" etc.). I don't think there is a database that could help. You could try the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. Ranked as one of the top zoos in the nation, it has over 2,000 of the world's rarest animals, including White Tigers. At the Louisiana Swamp exhibit catch a glimpse of the world's only white alligators. I've never seen a quoll there though. It would be in the Australian Outback section. Good Luck!

If you go to the website isis.org there is a listing of animals based on scientific nomenclature (you will have to know the Latin name of the animals that you want to look up). Most zoological institutions participate in this database which lists where each species is held. You can select a species and the database will return where and how many of each species is held at a particular institution. For example, if you are looking for bongos: go to the website, click on FIND ANIMALS and go to the category mammals. The scientific name for bongo is Tragelaphus eurycerus, so you scroll down and click on the T's (animals are alphabetized). When you click on the species the institutions that hold them will come up...they are abbreviated, but you can click on them and it usually gives the full name and address of the institution.

What would you want with a bongo, quoll, or narwhale? Just wondering...
