A "URL" is an acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator". It is an address to a specific web page or resource. Often, a URL will contain not only the protocol and server name, but a directory and page name as well. See th link below if you want to be put to sleep reading more.

A Uniform Resource Locator. This tells your browser what protocol to use (ftp? www? gopher?) and what domain is hosting this information (yahoo.com, google.com, cnn.com).
If you went to www.yahoo.com, you're telling your browser to talk to yahoo.com through the WWW interface (HTTP).
