Generally, you find out the name of the editor at a particular publication who accepts inquiries from freelancers, and you send him/her a "query", which is a short letter introducing yourself and describing what you would like to write about. It helps if you can also provide some "clips" --samples of your past writing, preferably something that's been published. if you go to mediabistro.com there are more tips about freelancing although some of the best content on that site requires a paid subscription. there is also a big fat book you can buy or look for in the library, "Writers Market 2007" (it comes out each year) which lists thousands of magazines etc. with the names of assigning editors, particular rules and policies each one has regarding freelancers, etc.

You could do a journalism course like i am doing- papers and magazines reject articles more often than not if you don't know the proper way to submit- its not just case of sending work in. I am doing a course with the writersbureau in journalism- it cost £250, you can pay in installment and they guarantee your money back if you haven't sold your work. Being freelance isn't as easy as it seems- believe me.

do what new jersey yogi bear suggested above. that is the correct way. i will not repeat it. did it for years on the side when i worked at newspapers. you won't get rich but it is something. i found doing both photography and stories brought more money. that is why i did it not for glory and never expect to make a killing. helped pay the rent. lol
