k, my little baby girl is 5 1/2 months, and she has been eating 1st foods for about 2 months now. and i was wondering if its okay to let her eat 2nd foods yet. like maybe oatmeal in the morning and then chicken and rice dinners for dinner time. this is her food schedual, in the morning she will eat some oatmeal with a fruit, and then at dinner she will have one of the first foods, the whole thing, and she eats organic. and then she will have 4 ounces of milk every 3 or 4 hours throughout the day except in the morning and at night before she goes to bed she gets 6 ounces. Do you think she is eating too much? and would it be wise to start her on 2nd foods?

(see, the reason why i want to start her on 2nd foods, is because i want her to stay full longer, so she dont want so much formula, because i think all that formula is making her chubby.)

Please also tell me what you feed your baby at 5 months

Thank you!!!!!!!!

um, a 5 month old is supposed to be chubby, and is supposed to get most her calories from milk/formula. Starting kids on solids too soon can lead to childhood obesity. If anything, increase her feedings to 6-8 oz at each bottle.

First off - 5 1/2 month old babies are supposed to be chubby. There is nothing wrong with it, and you definately don't want to make your baby be skinny! I mean, she is a baby, afterall. Once your baby starts crawling, pulling up and cruising she will start burning more calories and the baby fat will melt off anyway!!

I am surprised that you started feeding your little girl 1st foods at 3 1/2 months, that seems early to me. My daughter did not start on any baby food until 5 1/2 months, but to each her own! As far as 2nd foods go, yes you can start feeding her the fruits and veggies, most are the same foods she has been eating in 1st stage anyway. They are bigger portions so if she is still hungry at meals she may want them. Also, they are not that much thicker so I am sure she won't have a problem with it.

Make sure that when you are feeding her new foods you introduce 1 new food every 3 or 4 days so you can wait so see if she has a bad reaction to it, and be able to pin point the source. After you do all of the 1 ingredient foods, you can move onto the mixes - mixed vegetable, garden vegetable, apricot fruit medley, blueberry applesauce, etc. Your first step is to introduce her to all of the fruits and veggies. My daughters pediatrician told us not to start her on the meats and dairy (like Yo-baby and cottage cheese) until she was 9 months old, and at that time she would probably not want to eat the dinners, like chicken/rice puree - b/c babies don't usually like it. But that she would probably rather start transitioning to table food.

By the time my daughter was 7 months old, she was eating 3 meals a day - cereal for breakfast and dinner, along with a cube of veggies and cube of fruit for each meal.

If you are really not sure what to feed your daughter, I would call your pediatrician or the gerber hotline. 1-800-4-gerber. They also have helpful menus on their website. www.gerber.com

Don't worry about your baby being chubby. The second she starts crawling and walking she will slim down you just feed her what she needs.
I thought that chicken and rice dinner was a 3rd food not a second (I could be wrong)
I would go to the 2nd foods like sweet potatoes etc. They are usually just a little thicker then the runny 1st foods. That will prepare her for 3rds and so on.
I would not go for the chicken and rice right now. How many teeth does she have? Because the chicken and rice and others like that need teeth to chew where as the sweet potatoes, squash, etc doesn't

2nd foods are basically the same as 1st foods, they are just a little larger portions with more flavor options. What my pediatrician told me was after I had tried all the 1st foods with my son without any type of allergic reactions I could start on the 2nd foods. As for bottle feedings, by the time my son was 3 months old he was taking 6oz bottles every 3-4 hours. When it comes to formula you need to think in terms of a 24 hour period. Babies will take in exactly the right amount of ounces that they need to consume in a 24 hour period regardless of how you split it up. I am guessing that you are wanting her to sleep longer at night (been there done that). I would recomend increasing all of her bottles to 6 ounces or even 8oz if she will drink it. Babies bodies are designed to only eat what they need, so they will not ever overeat (unless they have a tummy ache) so if she will eat it, she needs it. If she is consuming the extra calories during the day that her body requires, she may stop waking up at night. Also you can try adding rice cereal to her bottles (a couple teaspoons). If she is still waking up at night after increasing her bottles during the day, she may just be waking up out of habit. This was the case with my son, at about 5mo he was still waking up 2-3x a night. Finally I had had enough, so one night when he woke up I just turned his music on (lullaby CD) and let him cry. He only cried for about 3 minutes then went to sleep. The next night when he woke up, I did the same thing and he only cried for about 1 minute before he went back to sleep. After the 2nd night he never woke up for a night time feeding again(thank god!) As for the amount of baby food you are feeding her, it sounds perfect. If she starts to seem exceptionally hungry during the day & not totally satisfied with just her bottle you can add a lunch time fruit or veggie. The goal is to have her eating 3 meals a day & one snack by the time she is one so you can stop the bottles altogether & switch to whole milk in sippy cups. As for the formula making her chubby, dont worry even the chunkiest babies slim down once they get mobile. The only thing that could make her too chubby is putting too much formula vs water into her bottles or giving her too much fruit juice. If you arent doing either of these then I am sure she is just perfect. Good luck!

I think it is a good idea on starting 2nd foods I just started my daughter on them and it keeps her a lot fuller for a lot longer. I don't think she is eating too much maybe too often and the 2nd foods would help out a lot with that. I feed my daughter rice cereal with a fruit for breakfast and dinner she has a full 2nd foods dinner chix and rice etc. Through out the day she has her formula and she likes the baby juice yogurts.

My daughter was eating first foods by 31/2 months and by 5 months was able to start eating the step 2. However take caution in the way your baby reacts as the meats are stronger in taste! My daughter gagged the first couple of times but eventully got used to it. She's a happy healthy 16 month old now!

I commend you for feeding your baby healthy foods, but they aren't like full grown people. They actually need all the fat, sugar, etc. in their diets to grow. Maybe try reducing the formula but increase the portions. Give her some of the 2nd foods and see if she likes them. Don't worry about her being chubby right now, all babies are. As she gets older and her body changes more that will change

At that age, babies CANNOT be overweight (ask your doctor). Furthermore, don't try to get her to lose weight, or even slow her weight gain, as you could seriously damage her brain development. Babies have very different nutritional needs than do adults--they NEED cholesterol and fats in amounts that would be high for adults--it assists her brain development. Also, babies won't overeat--that is a social thing that we learn to do as we get older. Right now, she eats as much as she needs to, which her body knows how to do. My baby ate every hour, on the hour, for 6 months! (She was breastfed). That is NORMAL (exhausting for me, but normal).

I would hold off on meats until she's a year old, as that is what the American Pediatrician Association says to do. They have a lot of hormones pumped into them that can interfere with her growth, and she gets her protein and fats from the formula anyway. Other foods to avoid until a year--honey, peanut butter/nuts, egg whites, oranges/orange juice, pineapple, and fish. Otherwise, if she is ok eating it, it's probably ok for her to have.

Hope this helps.

I only fed my baby 1st foods and cereal. We switched to 2nd foods around 6 months. If she's doing well with thicker textures, it should be ok to switch her. I think most babies are kind of chubby at 5 months.

ok, i like the Hawaiian satisfaction (Pineapple, Banana) and the Plum Pudding is likewise stable. Now the beef and veggie are not very stable many times because of the fact the are not pro and as adults we are used to a undeniable volume of spice. i'd recommned attempting assorted the cakes. i does not enable it replace right into a eating habitual staple. notwithstanding that's superb as quickly as and a whilst.
