The only law in effect is the FMLA and you have to have been employed for 1 year and the company has to have over 25(? unsure) employees. You are guaranteed 12 weeks UNPAID leave to care for yourself or a family member.

I could be wrong, but I don't think BY LAW any business is REQUIRED to pay sick time. Most companies that do pay sick time only pay it to full time employees and usually within a year. At some companies you get a set number of sick time hours/days at the beginning of the year and at some you accrue a certain # of hours per month.
For example:
If you start at a company July 1st, you may be eligible for sick time come January 1st with a set # of days/hours. Or you may be eligible to start accruing the days/hours, for example 1.5 days per month.
All in all, each company and its policies are different and it is basically up to you as an employee to negotiate well when you start at a new company. When the company comes to you with an offer its up to you to counter if you don't like part of the benefits package.

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is the only federal law I can think of that might apply (unless you are working on a government contract that might be covered by the SCA or DBRA - something with a wage determination in it). And, the only thing the FMLA offers is up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for your own serious health condition or the serious health condition of an immediate family member (spouse, parent, or child). You have to be employed by a firm that has at least 50 employees within 75 miles, for at least 20 weeks a year, AND have worked for 12 months (not necessarily consecutive), AND have worked for at least 1,250 hours within the preceding 12 months, in order to be eligible to take FMLA leave (see Title 29, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 825 for more info, or click here: http://www.dol.gov/dol/allcfr/ESA/Title_29/Part_825/toc.htm

You can check with your state labor department (number should be in the blue/government pages of your local phonebook) to see if there is some state law that would require sick leave, but if not, it's really up to each individual company to determine their own policy as to when, or even if, they are going to offer sick leave.

Depends. Anywhere from 90 days to a year is standard. But it can change based on what you negotiate when you are hired.

30 days or whatever their probation period is ...some companies have 90days... NOT a law just company policy
