It is okay to say just about anything, but "appearing his prominent self" doesn't make any sense. You could use appearing to be his prominent self, or appearing as his prominent self. These are a bit clearer gramatically, but do little to explain what you mean by prominent self.

appearing as his promonent self sounds better..still does not make any sense. and is very concited sounding!
