I have a Dell Inspiron notebook running Windows XP Professional. I don't know whether I'm missing out on a better computer experience, or missing a lot of problems, by not upgrading. What do you think? Also, have people used the upgrade package, or is it better to just "start from scratch" with Vista and install the full program without upgrading?

Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

I have a Toshiba and did they Upgrade....It sucks!! don't do it. For the love of god man save yourself!! Whew, sorry got a little carried away.

But for real...Don't unless you wan't to delete certain drivers and try to add them back and then update to all you addon programs and devices. I consider myself pretty computer savvy but this hunk a crap. It comes up with a big ole long list of what will work, might work and won't work. It's not all that clear. Now when I power up I get to messages about crap that does not work. So, I have to tell them to ignore until I want to spend an hour on the phone with Toshiba to work it all out.

I also get a pop up that tells me windows startup does not like something...whatever.

Now on to the pleasures of vista. They change how everything looks the startup, shutdown, control panel, all of it.
If you think you new how to get around..you will have to relearn. It will ask you with all this security crap.. do you want to do this, do you want to load that...Shut up, I clicked it didn't I??

I really don't see any need for upgrading if you have security. I would rather have bought a machine with it already on, but that's just me.

Have a good one.

I'm going to say No. Vista was not successful in terms of happy users and uses up a tremendous amount of resources and has high requirements. I work at a company with 100 computers and we're still on Windows XP and plan on being on XP for a long time, at least until the new Windows 7 is out, and not Vista. Vista has been refuted to have bugs, mostly for businesses due to the networking issues. Vista Home is probably a safe bet for you as it's the most reliable of the Vista systems. So if you do want to upgrade, Vista Home should do you fine, unless you're planning on doing some networking stuff. But I also say keeping Windows XP (that works great) isn't a bad idea either.

There are several things to think about when choosing to upgrade to Vista. If you have an older computer, Vista might slow it down even more. Vista has new features, has fixed a lot of XP problems, but it is still new, and most software has yet to take advantage of Vista, and older software might have problems with Vista. If cost is not an issue and you aren't worried that your computer will slow down, I say go for it. The upgrade version can be a pain. If you ever reformat your drive or have to reinstall windows... that means a super long xp install and vista upgrade install, followed by download updates to install. I'd say get the real version. Also, if you buy a new computer, you will have 2 complete versions of windows at your disposal.

I just got Vista myself, and love it. I think it's worth it to go ahead and adopt if you have a semi-recent computer.

You really can't get the full experience of Vista with an older system and an OS upgrade. You need a lot of RAM (at least 2G) a fast processor and a really good video card. there are still a lot of programs that aren't compatible with Vista, so you would have to tackle that. my suggestion would be to either upgrade the hardware as well as the OS, or keep this one until time to buy a new one and then get Vista.

I have both. My thought at this time, is simply that if you don't have a lot of work on your computer that requires an updated O.S. then stick with XP until Microsoft gets the bugs worked out of vista. Vista has a lot of neat features, but there are some major headaches too. It boils down to a matter of "Do you really need it?"

I'm a Help Desk manager and have been doing this 25 yrs....
Heck NO to Vista. Give it a year or so to 'settle' down i.e. SP1.
Also unless you have an uber-video card, the enhanced graphics are not going to work. Also the minimum recommended RAM is 1gb, unless it's the barebones version.
More to the point, does it enhance productivity?
Not that we saw.

uh....NO. lol "missing out on a better computing experiance"? lol no. there are so many bugs in vista, u'd think it was a rainforest. (or something...) it will slow your computer down. You shouldn't even try to run it without ATLEAST 2GB of RAM. and a 7200RPM or SATA hard drive, because vista makes your hard drive spin so freakin fast that it will wear it out. and you will lose all your data. so wait like, 2-3 years before buying microsoft crap. Now...if you want a better compting experiance, go on eBay and buy yourself a G4 or later Mac laptop running OS X 10.3 or later! you will be blown away...trust me.

Good luck!

i have vista, it works A-OK for me, but others have tons of issues (prob porn sites / downloading all the crap / and myspace)
