I think a lot of people like short chapters and suspense, but what else?

does anyone not like short chapters? of only a few pages

Humour. And very dark humour. I've bumped into quite a few books lately that pulled it off flawlessly.

I like short chapters so that they may be read in one sitting if I do not have a lot of time to read. I enjoy the lower reading level. Just because it is written for adults does not mean that it has to be written on a post-graduate level. Authors are realizing that I believe. The variety of topics keeps things pretty interesting as well. This my way of answering. I hope it helps.

I enjoy the language. Modern literature makes a lot of bold statements about the world and the state of it; social commentary interwoven throughout is excellent. I find that it's there, but not too preachy. I really like that. I also like the fact that the commentary is written in a language that is easy to read.
