Why do americans spell more phonetically than the british?

No, seriously. It goes back to the days of Benjamin Franklin and others who, after the American War of Independence, decided that as new 'Americans' they should try to invent a new language of 'American'. The problem was that everyone spoke English, after all most of them and their families originated in England. Franklin had spent lots of time in England and had studied the customs and language of the people there so he devised a way of speaking and spelling 'American' whilst still retaining the English language so that it could still be understood by the general population. He therefore decreed that spellings of words, where practical, should be changed to 'American' to distinguish it from English. This is called 'bastardisation' as being an illegitimate offspring of a genuine language. Under his instruction words were changed en masse so that, for example colour became color and recognise became recognize and so on. Overall hundreds of words were subtly changed so as to be different but still understood. Sadly in the process much of the colour and depth of the new language was lost from the original. He also suggested a new way of speaking which is where Americans get their strange accent from.

I believe we did at the end of the revolution to seperate ourselves from the british. We changed the rules to make them more American.
