batteries, frozen meals (the meals for you), and a fitness ball
the balls for both you and the baby, gentle bouncing was great to sooth them
oh and all outfits that snap or zipper or open down the front,
getting outfits off after a blow-out that have to go over the head, can get messy
swaddling blankets, the right size, most are too small, bulky, etc. The hospitals always seem to have the best ones.

Here's my list of must-haves:
Carseat
Sling--I like my Maya Wrap, but there are many to choose from
Diapers--at least 2 dozen cloth diapers, 3 dozen is better
sleepers
receiving blankets
The Baby Book by William Sears
Nice to have:
Swing
The No-Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley
baby nail trimmers
natural baby soap
nasal bulb syringe
"cute" baby outfits
Changing table--I made mine from an old shelving unit.
That's it. Newborns need very little. Just love, milk and lots of diapers.
If you decide to check the list on Babycenter (and you will, I'm sure), then remember that those products are there because the manufacturers have paid for the spot on the list. If you don't believe me, check out the banner ads on the pages there.
Cloth diapers are awesome. My baby almost never gets rash.

A boppy pillow
About 10 onsies
Some gowns... you will not want to be unbuttoning all those cute little pajamas in the middle of the night!
A few outfits... don't buy too many small ones. Get more gowns... you probably won't be going out of the house much at first!
A crib or basinette
A baby swing
Mylecon gas drops
diaper and wipes
spit rags/burp cloths

--A pack and play: it's great if you don't want to switch to a crib right away. It's great for travel too.
--A swing: great to have!
--Forget the bottle warmers and go for a small crockpot. It'll do the same thing and cost at least $10 less.
--Bottles, even if you plan on breastfeeding. You'll want to have a break at some point, I'm sure.
--Diapers
--You can TRY pacifiers, but not all newborns like them. Some do, some don't. It's just the way it goes.
--Receiving blankets: PERFECT for swaddling.

believe it or not the one thing that I had to have was a bottle of rubbing alcohol and q-tips for the cord. I thought that it was the strangest gift that I had got but Was wrong. Now when I go to baby showers I buy a diaper bag and load it with all of the necessity's just so that the mom could have at least two of everything.

The only true "must haves" I can think of are a place for the baby to sleep, a car seat, basic clothes, diapers, and food - whether it be mother's milk or formula. Obviously, if you are giving formula you also need bottles.
What we found very useful was a bouncy seat. (Although not all kids liked them.) Our baby hated his swing. Also, a basic stroller - we started with those frames that a car seat fits into and it was great.)

A Swing, bouncer, blankets (recieving blankets can be used for burping and swaddling), pacifiers, bottles, pumps, boppy, bassinett, stroller (for those days that you are couped up and wanna go walking), Diapers, diaper rash cream (I recommend desiten original) baby bath, baby soap, bibs, burp clothes (recommend cloth diapers they absorb a ton and come in big packages)

Cloth diapers. REALLY! They have soooooo many uses, it's unbelievable. I use them as burp cloths, portable changing mats, drool cloths to put in the crib at the baby's head while he's sleeping (and drooling), extra cloths to put on the changing mat during times of diarrhea, and all-around uh-oh cloths... they are great! My son is 9 months old and I use them as much now as I did when he was a newborn!

After my daughter was able, I depended on a bouncy chair. One that plays music and vibrates. She spent a lot of time in there watching me go about my chores and hear me read her stories. When the batteries died, she'd start crying. So I knew that she thought it was very soothing. It was also a great way to keep her from laying down all the time.

Diapers, feeding bottles, crib are just some of the few important things to acquire when having a new baby. http://babyschwag.net/ can help you for more essential items needed in welcoming your newborn.
