I understand what the civil war was about. I understand that slavery needed to end. I also understand that for some of us in the south, our grandfathers carried that flag. Not because of slavery but to protect their land. George Washington owned slaves. Should his pictures and statues be removed from public places because of it? Why can't it be understood as part of history instead of a racist statement? My neighbors have one on their porch. I'm telling you there have never been sweeter people, and they are good christians, NOT racists.

By the way- I KNOW that the war was not about slavery. There were lots of slaves in the North as well. All over America there were slaves. They were brought over by AMERICANS. Not southerners. So then why is the AMERICAN flag not a symbol of racism? The native "americans" were also victimized. What historic symbol should they protest as a reminder?

sarge- do you not think the rest of the world will soon see "old glory" as a symbol of gluttony and hate? when does it become so offensive that they tell us to stop flying it?

Maybe you do not understand what the civil war was about. It was not about slavery. Slavery was and still is the popular cover up invented by the Republicans in Washington, in the 1860s, for the true economics behind that war.
I imagine that when you write "rebel flag" you mean the Confederate battle flag: blue and white St. Andrew's cross with stars inside the bars of the cross on a red field.
The reason people equate that flag with racism is because the winners of the civil war spread the lie that white southerners and any and everything they stand for is rascist.
I think nowadays more people flie the Confederate battle flag than ever before as a sign of protest over the bad press with which non southerners have had their minds poisened toward us.

yeah, it is to bad. The Rebel flag is an important part of history and (more importantly) the meaning of it and it's importance has changed drastically through the years... I have no problem with the flag these days because I have truly come to understand why it is flown and what it means to those who fly it...Let the damn thing fly, it does not hurt anyone or insinuate anything but pride. Leave it alone.
PS> It is a symbol and symbols mean different things to different people, the flag itself is not the problem. It is just a flag. The intent of the person flying it is what should be questioned. But people who point and yell "racism" whenever they see one are the only ignorant people in the equation.

Because segregation was so severe in the south and the rebel flag was a symbol of the south, racism got linked to that flag.
I wish it could just be seen as the flag of the Civil War confederate states, but the other link got hooked on and now too many people associate the two as one.

human beings % some thing to cry approximately. The accomplice flag is an emblem of the place somebody comes from. To be an element of the South is to be an element of what could have been a separate entity. yet another united states fullyyt. It DOESNT count if the South supported slavery. there have been many different adjustments that set the South different than for the Union throughout that factor era, and those are continuously ignored in choose of the morally uncomfortable one. in spite of what all and sundry says appropriate to the "insurrection flag", overlook approximately them. they're being purely as bigoted as they accuse you of being in the event that they permit the place you come back from as a judgement of character. And as for the genius comparing the insurrection flag to the Swastika - thats like hating the american flag if I have been a Mexican. We stomped them quite good back in the day. Thats like hating the British flag if I have been an American. They gunned us down as quickly as, undergo in strategies? not something quite or morally good approximately that - they murdered "rebels". the version is that we've moved on previous those issues. Its time that liberals who have not any theory what suffering rather is strikes previous subject concerns jointly with flags meant to reveal historic previous, and starts off to concentration on issues that rather impression our united states.

ok, for starters the american flag as it is stands for the same kind of racism as the dirty old rebel flag. i think it's a matter of perspective, if you ask a native "american" what the american flag means they'd more than likely say exactly what blacks would say about the dirty rag with an "x" on it. when america invaded iraq they arrogantly tore down a statue of saddam and put up the american flag. if you're on the losing team you don't get to fly your colors. isn't that how you all play the game?

Just as a side note, Slavery was not the only reason the civil war was fought over. It was fought over any number of reasons. But it is equated to the abolishonist movement because of its high profile / anti hate connection. And you are right that the flag itself should not be an icon of hate.

It is a symbol that has been used by the KKK as well as other southern white racists.
I went home to Memphis TN a month or so ago and had a bad encounter with a guy in a pickup that was covered in rebel flags, and one look at me and it was obvious that he had a problem with me.
I understand that for some southerners that is not what the symbol meant, but for others it clearly does.

The rebel flag does not offend me. It is the racists who use the flag as a symbol of racism. You are right, racism is not what the flag stands for. But the people who use it for that purpose give it a bad name.

I can appreciate that the flag is a historic memorial... but cant you appreciate that to some of us that flag represents the preservation of white supremacy? Would you expect Jewish people to accept the swastica? Would you expect Japanese americans to accept the anti-jap propaganda? How is it fair for us, the marginalized group, to accept it an just honor it? Washington did own slaves, so did many other presidents, there are monuments in their honor as presidents of the USA. The confederate flag, at a political level, represents the bastardized confederacy. It represents a time where there was division in the union, represents a rebel state. For that reason there will never be acceptance of this flag, but for personal reasons, I cannot receive it for what it represents to my race. I would expect you to honor that, and to understand it, just like i honor your acceptance of the flag, and understand it.

because people don't know their history, they think that the civil war was fought because the north and south disagreed about slavery, They don't realize that slavery was only one of several issues and the real cause was a lack of representation for the south and the issue of state's rights verses the federal government's rights.
People are generally stupid and think with their emotions rather than with facts and logic.
