On one occasion (a while ago now) I was standing in a queue, the girl in front had a basket with about a dozen items, the woman at the till scanned no more than three of them and the bill came to around £2.
It was one of those horrible occasions where I knew a fraud had been committed but I couldn't bring myself to report the cashier. (Incidentally the 'customer' looked very much like a daughter of the cashier.)
Since then I often go in but avoid using that till, the cashier always gives me nervous glances.
Today, hers was the only empty aisle, but I queued behind the next one to her which had a full conveyor belt of groceries.
She looked so worried I wanted to put her out of her misery by saying,"I did see what you did, but on this occasion I'll keep quiet."
Obviously I didn't do this as she would probably've blanked me.
That's it really was it a bit cowardly of me not to report it in the first place? What would you have done?

You say that over time you have grown to know the cashier so I suspect besides blind loyalty you know that the cashier doesn't do this for all of her customers. I would think about the situation. What type of items were in the cart (food, clothing, survival items). If the items were for survival and the 'customer' looked like she might have been struggling I wouldn't make a big deal about it. If the items were merely entertainment items such as books, dvd's, etc. I would report her anonomously.
You don't necessarily know the situation at hand. It could of been that her daughter didn't have any food or that the mother was just trying to help feed her family. She knows that she did wrong. Don't report her unless she does it again and you see her.

at this point it is a little late to do anything. I'm not sure what i would of done at the moment that it happened. i don't know if being an employee if they get some kind of a discount and if this was the daughter then maybe the mother was using hers for her daughter or if by chance the items were from some reduced cart, you never know all the circumstances. i think i might of at the time maybe said to the cashier " wow, where did she find all that cheap stuff at, i must of missed that aisle!" or "wow, I'm gonna have to talk to the store manager and ask him to please put up a sign on those cheap items so we can all find them!" what's done is done and you can't go back now to try and fix it. although you could possibly mention to one of the other clerks that you don't like using her lane and tell the clerk why. you know word of mouth, then they could keep an eye on her. these are just all thoughts that just ran through my mind. pick out what you think might be helpful.☺♥†

If it is the first time that you have seen the cashier do it, and she realised that you had noticed her 'slight carelessness with the scanner', she might have learnt her lesson because she is scared that you might tell the store manager. If you see her do it a second time then if I were you I would report it. She seems pretty nervous from your description and has probably realised that what did was wrong. I don't think that you are cowardly, if we reported every injustice that we see then we would never get anything done as we would always be reporting somebody for something. Leave it, and keep a clear conscience.

that might have been her last time doing such a thing. You did nothing wrong so you don't have anything to worry about her getting over on you. Did you do the correct thing, I am sure if she was still doing such a thing, she would have been fired by know, most large stores have undercover guards for shrink issues, they are there to protect the interest of the store. It will only be a matter of time till she is caught and they do call the police, it is shop lifting. I worked in that business and saw many of cashiers go that way.

Hey Jamino, I understand your plight...well I would have firstly gone to her as soon as I saw the incident and I would make sure that she knows she is wrong and whether there was more to this story then I would just close my eyes on it having made her aware of not doing it in other cases; but if she denies the responsibility for her act and was actually guilty of it I would have certainly reported her because justice and honesty comes first for me! People have to get the right ethics of being a responsible citizen of this society!! We should be looking out for each other not causing trouble for each other! The sooner people get this the better it will be for this world!! :-)

I would have gone there with a basket of 12 cd's put 3 on the belt to pay for and said don't worry I'll not grass about what I saw, after all these supermarkets make how much per minute?

Happens a lot.A person i know did the same for
his mum and dad,he even told me to go down but
but i am no thief.Any way he was caught and finished
on the spot.So i am really the same as you,i should
have reported them but didn`t.I have always wondered
hat would have happened if had become involve ?.

You could always let a supervisor know anonymously that she's been slipping items by... It's because people steal that the groceries are more expensive for those that pay.... Or maybe let the cashier know that you saw her and maybe she won't do it again, but that's doubtful...

These companys rip farmers off worldwide so i really couldnt care less about a supermarkets loss large or small
The way they treat their staff is awful anyway, be thankful you dont have to work for them
