Why are we looking always for superlatives? Our society is not digital. So we have a multitude of answers to character and performance of each and every president. We also forget that our presidents adorn themselves with the work, mind and spirit of a great many other people, thinkers and manipulators, who do the "ghost"-work. We seem to like this creation of myth of superior beings, who have been, based on our history, mainly simple-minded not too highly intellectual people with big egos when they entered the election process. And then power corrupts most of the good character that may have been left.

Amazing how so many of the answers so far are flawed in facts and filled in with nonsense. I do think it helps to have lived through the time period in question, as I have. I do not agree with all that Reagan, Bush and Bush have done, but we are a world beyond where we would be had their opponents won. My God it shivers me to think of those inadequate people being President. Some don't have any concept of the 20% interest rate and 20% inflation we had during Carter's "leadership". That did change quickly due to Reagan. Of course you must include the effects of Congress and Supreme Court rulings and international incidents/affairs in any analysis of what happened during a President's term. As to FDR, he had multiple terms and a congress that he controlled and the news media supported him or in the case of the conservative media, they treated him civily because that was the proper way to behave. Of course he looked good. But would a good president have pulled us out of the Depression sooner--it took WWII for "him" to really pull us out. The liberal media doesn't care about civility, so they are not limited in their blind, caustic assaults that make Republican presidents look bad.

The Country would not be what it is to today without Jefferson, with his contributions to democracy, and his purchase of the Louisiana Territory.
Lincoln kept the Country from becoming two nations; it was a close call for awhile, and he abolished slavery.
FDR brought us out of the Depression, and incidentially saved Capitalism. He led us through WWII. The world, not just America would be a different place without him.
America would not have existed without Washington.
Unquestionably, these four men are the greatest presidents.
Much of what has been said of Reagan, and his disasterous ecomonic and tax policies are accurate. Between Reagan and G.W. Bush (but not GHW Bush,) we've gone from a $900 billion debt to a $9,000 billion debt; not very Conservative. We have been seriously weakened by incurring such massive debt.
Reagan, and his handling of the Soviet Union was great. The theory was accurate; he handled putting pressure on Gorbachev masterfully, and his escalation of military spending caused the Soviet Union, already weakened by a war in Afganistan, to collapse.
Lou Cannon's books "Govenor Reagan," and "President Reagan," are balanced accounts for people who are interested in actual facts.
As a person, I liked Ronad Reagan, but Reagan's tenure is a mixed bag. Don't tell the Conservatives.

JFK: America’s Last Real President

Forty-three years ago today, the coup d’etat of America was completed. President John F. Kennedy was the last American president to attempt to put American interests first - and it cost him his life. Since then, our country has been the servant of the Jewish state and her Israeli-in-exile citizens with American passports. After that fateful day, the country plunged headlong into Vietnam, the sexual revolution eroded American family life, and, most importantly, Israel became the tail that wagged the American dog. The country was never the same after November 22, 1963 - morally, socially, or spiritually. And this was by design.

Good but not the best, I bass this on the ones who could have chose to end our union, Washington, could have become emperor, Mr. Lincoln could have destroyed the south completely. The both put the nation first. Mr. Regan was a close third.

No he is not. Most experts put him right at the top of the middle list of presidents. At the very top are Lincoln, Washington, both Roosevelts, Jefferson. Depending on the survey one also finds Truman and Eisenhower near the top. Seldom does Reagan find his way to the top. Carter by contrast rarely finds himself at the absolute bottom but he is no where near the top either. Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in brokering peace between Israel and Egypt. Nobel Prizes are not awarded to just anybody, so Carter must have had something going for him.
By the way if you do research, which obviously you haven't, you would also discover that the 400 hostages in Iran that were released as Ronald Reagan took the oath of office were released largely due to the efforts of Jimmy Carter.

no.
Abraham Lincoln not only changed history for African Americans, he also united a country back together.Without out the help of technology. Do you know how long it would take to get information back in those days! He was also a very good role model. From what we know he was a good guy.
But if you are talking about the greatest president of recent times. I would have to say Bill Clinton. He did lie. But he knew how to run a country. He did a great job.

hmmmm, i wondered if this question were real and after reading the answers I see how many Faux News fans are out there.
He did provide a spark of energy when he wasn't sleeping, but that spark is largely what has us in the position we are in today after his beliefs have had some time to run their course.
There have been very few "Great Presidents" Some good things happened on his watch but he was not the reason for them.
Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Eisenhower, Roosevelt, and some other very good presidents but not Reagen and not Great. His myth is larger than life. He could act, talk the part very well though!

I always like Reagan, if it wasn't for him I would have most likely spent life past the 80s in a Soviet POW camp. its clear that the Soviets would have launched an attack into Europe if Carter had been reelected.
