A dwarf puffer would be right at home in a 12 gallon tank. As for other choices a bit more advanced than guppies as well as being bright and colorful, check out killifish. They are not common in pet stores, but easily available from many sources on the net. I would suggest buying from a breeder direct for the best prices and highest quality fish. Your tank would easily support 3-4 pairs, maybe a few more depending on which you choose.

Here's a few examples:

Hope that helps

The freshwater Puffer (Dwarf Puffer/Pea Puffer/Pygmy Puffer) would look great in that tank, any you are right, they would need to be the only species in the tank (except for some Otos, they tend to do well together). You could keep up to 5 Dwarf Puffers together in the 12 gallon tank because they only get about 1.5 inches. They are rather messy fish though, so you do need to keep up on your tank maintenance. The other problem would be that Puffers are very picky eaters, and often only eat live food like worms and snails, but you may get them to eat frozen (they almost never eat flake food). They are also very territorial so they require a tank that seems excessively planted. The fish should rarely be able to see both sides of the tank from any spot in the tank. This requires loads of tall, leafy plants that will break the fishs' line of sight. If you wanted some color INSTEAD, you could do Killifish, Tetras, Barbs, Platties, Mollies, Guppies, Swordtails, Rasboras, DWARF Gouramis, or a fun fish like Kuhli Loaches. Good luck!

Even though Freshwater Puffers are called Freshwater they live in Briny water which is half fresh half salt I wouldn't suggest doing that because you would have to mess with th P.H. I woul suggest gourami's or Cichlids. they are really cool aquarium fish.

I have a 30 Gallon Oceanic tank that houses two fanitail goldfish and I plan to add a few more. Goldfish are very vibrant, beautiful, and relatively easy to care for. (i.e. they don't require live plants) And can basically thrive on a basic Goldfish Flake diet, although you should add some frozen foods/greens to their diet. Get two fantail goldfish. They are perfect for the beginner. Although they do need a very strong filter, and are very messy.
