I want to take a vacation, but I only have the weekend to take it. I want to go somewhere that is less than...I guess an 8 hour drive from Birmingham. I wouldn't mind going to the beach, but I have already been to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, and I want something new. Which means no to Gatlinburg or Atlanta either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not really picky about where I go, just as long as its not too far away, and I've never been there. I forgot to scratch Charleston off of the list, I use to live there. It is a great place, so Alicat, you'll have fun there. Plus, I didn't really want to go that far. Since I only have the weekend, I don't want to spend a lot of time driving, so I want to limit myself to Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and possibly South Carolina. But thanks for the suggestions so far!

Not sure exactly what you are looking for. I have never been to Gulf Shores but I love the Destin, FL area which isn't too much farther. I have some friends that love St George Island near Apalachicola (sp?), FL. They say it is not very developed and so it is a nice escape.
Also, how about Savannah...Tybee Island has a nice beach there and there is a lot to do in Savannah. If you go a bit farther, how about Charleston, SC. I have never been there but am going next year. I have heard wonderful things about that place.

Well you do have some options.
Chattanooga and the sites there,Look out mountain, the Tennessee Aquarium.
Nashville has more than the music..
Over in Memphis for dining and entertainment.
Want a little risk on your week end there are the casinos in Mississippi.
But true to relaxing is the Emerald coast of Florida.
The sites in the Atlanta area are good and enjoyable.

Vicksburg Miss. might be what you are looking for. It's 279 miles and is on the Mississippi River. It is a beautiful city with a lot of history. The Civil War cemetery is there and is really lovely and very interesting to drive though. There are plenty of spots to stop the car and look at the monuments. There is a lot of night life. Check it out on line. Have a good time where ever you go.

What about the Mobile/Fairhope area? I love the park where the USS Alabama is located. There are excellent restuarants across the bridge in Fairhope. Plus there used to be a great brew pub in Mobile. Don't know if its still there.
I guess if that doesn't sound fun, Pensacola is only a few hours away. Great national park in Navarre. Have fun -

Stay in state and visit some attractions that you have not seen. Alabama has tons of stuff for music fans, sports fans, and history buffs. Check the internet.
