I have looked at different websites and the recommendations for this are all over the map. What is the best SG for a saltwater aquarium? I plan on keeping fish only, not a reef aquarium. I have seen recommendation for anything from 1.022 to 1.026.

It depends on what your keeping, and that's why you see so much variation.

If you have a reef tank, it should be 1.024-1.026.

If you keep Red Sea species (wild caught), it should be 1.027.

If you only have fish, it should be 1.020-1.026.

If you're treating for parasites, since they don't handle lower osmotic pressure well, you can drop the salinity as low as 1.015 for many fish species.

Overall, the salinity will vary as water evaporates and you top the water off (the salt doesn't evaporate, so the salinity will increase). I try to keep it around 1.024 in my tanks, this way I have a few points it can increase as the water evaporates if I don;t get it topped off right away.

no longer being dumb. No you do no longer unavoidably want the two numbers. we used particular gravity in straightforward terms for years and that's a great decide of the salt content cloth. particular gravity would be tormented via temperature and different compounds interior the water yet as long as new water is adjusted to be at or in simple terms below the tank analyzing you're ok. As time is going on the salt point will strengthen interior the tank and you may decrease it fairly via adjusting the point on your water ameliorations.

That depends on the type of fish you are keeping and where they are from. Most of the ocean is 1.022 which is perfect for most marine life. Since the salinity of the ocean and seas change quickly to varying degrees, keeping your tank at a stable gravity is always best.

What is best for your tank really depends on the fish you are planning on keeping. Tangs are best kept at 1.022 while eels can have water that is higher or even lower.

I try to keep all my tanks at an even 1.023 which is a great number for all fish. Having a stable SG is best.
