Giovanni Schiaparelli examined mars though a 8 in telescope and drew images of the red planet that were preceived by Percival Lowell and others as irrigation canals.

Well, first there were theories, but then if you look at Mars from earth in a telescope you can see some canals && channels. also the mars rover or whatever went to space saw some channels that may have held water â¥

It was Schiaparelli who first reported seeing lines on Mars but it was Lowell who first proposed that these lines were canals built by an intelligent civilization on Mars.
