We will be a mid to late 20's family with one kid and one dog relocating from Phenix City, AL to Birmingham area after I get out of the Army. Were both originally from Panama city, FL, . Wife is an accountant, I will be seeking employment with local law enforcement. Looking for a place that is relatively safe, good schools, house prices that match our jobs, a big backyard, the best possible place to raise a family. We'll be looking to buy.. Any help would be appreciated.

It really depends on where you both work, however Hoover would be a good choice. Good schools, good range of housing, and lots of amenities. It's a family friendly area.
I'd avoid the 280 corridor. Terminal congestion.

Also, Helena and Pelham are pretty good, too, for families starting out--although your wife may have a longer commute if she works closer to downtown.

North of B'ham is the Gardendale, Morris, Mt.Olive and Kimberly areas. My daughter has 2 small girls and lives in the Kimberly area. She lives in subdivision and loves it. Good schools and good churches. She knows all her neighbors. If subdivision isn't what you want, there are plenty of other housing neighborhoods too. Kimberly is close to B'ham but out of the madness of traffic. Also not far from Warrior and Cullman which expands the employment field. Cullman is great place to live, dry county.

Look into the Hoover or North Shelby area.Bouth are minutes from Birmingham and have fine school systems. The Police and Fire protection in these areas are very good.
Also the community of Chelsea is a good growing area.
