Because that isn't enough memory. Vista really wants 2Gb, Microsoft just won't tell you.

When windows XP came out, they said the Minimum for it was 256 RAM....
Imagine windows xp takes up 256 ram, and you have antivirus, antispyware, and other auto programs installed... Youd need way more than 256 mb of RAM...
Windows Vista Basic requires 512 as a "minimum" which means (it will work on 512, but it wont as good as it could).
Windows Vista Premium, Business, and Ultimate require at least 1GB of RAM...
I've ran Vista on a Dual Core 2GB of ram computer, and it still goes slow somewhat...
Vista features something called Aero, also known as the THEMES that make it look cool.
While vista LOOKS VERY NICE< it really eats up the memory and speed of the computer in just running it... Even if you have Basic, I would go with 1GB for Basic, and Premium, Business or Ultimate, I would use 2GB. (1GB = 2x512, 2GB= 4x512)

2GB is not required to make Basic run smoothly. You can run smoothly with 1GB, however, if you want to do anything meaningful on the computer (which hopefully you didn't want to do considering it's a cheap laptop), you'll really want 2GB. 512MB is the bare minimum for Vista, and as with anything else, the bare minimum will cause it to run slowly.
You can upgrade the RAM in many laptops, so hopefully you can in yours. A RAM upgrade won't cost much.

I believe that 512 is a little low for Vista. Microsoft says the minumum requirements are 512 and that it will run at that, in which it does...just very very slow. I would recommend atleast 1.5 GB if not 2 GB of Ram.

Vista requires much more than 512 MB of ram to operate smoothly. 2 GB (2048 MB) of ram is most likely required to use Vista and do anything worthwhile, since Vista Basic is quite heavy in graphical interfaces, requiring much memory (ram) to work at all.

Not enough ram memory. With vista best works with 2GB memory might get away with only 1 GB depending on processor.

512 MB is bare minimum for Vista.
I have the same, with Aero enabled though. Works fine mostly, sometimes sluggish.
Get an upgrade.
