Not really. Study history. We have the advantages of mobility, awareness, and communication. We can use all of these to try to educate people and move them out of poverty, prejudice, and hatred!

Actually, I think the opposite, the world is a much improved place. We are concerned now about topics that were not even thought of in times past.

War has always been a part of human history, and will be a part of its future, true, but look at the difference in the situation in Iraq compared to Vietnam. The casualties are much less because of better precision with weapons then in that area. Compare it to WWII and the carpet bombing that took place which devestatived cities, and the horror of war is much reduced. Certainly not eliminated, but reduced.

Crime is a matter of perspective. The violent crimes that take place in New York (or any large city) are news all over the country. The world is much more accessible by all of us through the news, and stories are sensationalized such that what happens across the country feels like it is next door. Add this to greater recognition of crimes (like rape) and it sounds like we are subject to more crime when in reality we are just more aware of what has always been happening. Awareness is the first step to tackling the problem.

Childabuse didn't exist 100 years ago. Not that it didn't happen, but it was considered acceptable. Children could be beaten, starved, tortured and it was not illegal. Today we can hardly think of a worse thing then abusing children, a significant change in our ethics and awareness.

So again I say, we are on a uphill path. Things look grim not because we are suddenly beset by these problems, but because we now see them as problems to be solved instead of ignoring these things.

Times and people havent changed. what has changed is the accessibility of information, the way wars are fought and technology. Had computers been around 100 years ago pedophiles would have been using them then too.

I never said we became better. I said people are the same. You just hear about things more than in the past because of better technology.

As each generation gets older, we always start to "feel" like things are going downhill...

But the "reality" is that it's getting better...

It's "us" that's going downhill...

"...drinking from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche comin' down the mountain..."

No we're fine, we need to find another usable energy source relatively soon but options, though maybe expensive, exist already. We're gonna be ok.

hopefully everyone has noticed the world is a much worse place to be in compared to when our parents lived--
in order to make it better--we must inventory ourselves first and foremost
