Over-population and the fact that the sons are duty-bound to take care of their parents in their old age! Girls are not empowered as they are in the States, nor giving the education and skills training that we enjoy!! As adults, they are rarely able to take-care of their aging parents. Birth control is not generally practiced and so this primitive "abortion" after birth and according to sex of the infant, is employed. Here, Social Security and work pensions help take care of the aged! No such things in India and China! Girls are only burdens to be married off to the most eligible men! It's the same way at the other end of the lives! In India, it was only recently that it was outlawed to BURN the widow alive with her deceased husband!!!!

Because in their culture, the a male child is more valuable then a female. For instance, a male can carry on the family name and help in the family business, while the female will eventually marry off into another family and become one of them. However, what many who do this don't realize is the gender gap. Already in china, there are 10% of their men won't get married because their are not enough females. So years from now, these countries are going to have a ton of guys but no girls, so they will have population issues.

I'm no expert, but in a sociology course I took in college the sentiment was that culturally, a male is the offspring of choice. But that cultural aspect is mainly due to economical reasons. Most of the population of those two countries are rural farmers/villagers. To have a boy is a good chance of economic improvement; both because they can either work on the farm or achieve more through the country's social economic latter. Boys are granted a better chance through education as well. Girls are just another "mouth" to feed and an economic burden. Even when the girl is planned to be married-off the family has to take the pain sake of coming up with a dowry. A dowry emphasizes this inconvenience of women as well because they have to "pay" another family to take her in. We had to watch horrible videos of how they do it. It is horrible for the mother to do but the male usually forces her. One lady had to smash the infant into a wall until it's head smashed in. They just left in on the street like garbage. The husband treated it like business while the mother frantically cried. It is sad this still happens as we speak (well, write).

A couple in China is only allowed to have at least two kids and if it's a girl they will kill it and try next time for a boy. horrible but true. it's their govt that wil force them to commit such an act that parents doesn't have a choice to keep the child. it's a man's world out there.

This should tell you how much they value their women and how much they believe in them. Yes, communism is bad, I've lived in it. But that's not an excuse.
