I was driving and my licensed is suspended (wrong I know), however my tag is completely legal, but a policeman was behind me and randomly ran my tag, now I did nothing wrong for him to run my tag, he says he was justing randomly running it. Doesn't he have to have a reason to do so? Can he just pick someone out of the crowd and run their tags and pull them over without provocation?

Anytime a police officer runs a tag, he suspects something.

Reason enough. Your plate is on the car and it's a public road. The car and driver have an obligation to be on the road legally

Yes, police can just randomly run your plates. That's not considered a search because your license plate information is publicly displayed, and the records they are checking are already information available to the police by law.

If the plate check reveals that your license (or the license of the registered owner of the car) was suspended, then that creates the reasonable suspicion necessary to pull the car over and check your ID.

Yes an officer can run your tag anytime . If he ran the plate, then your info came up and was most likely flagged , that your license was suspended. That gave the officer the right to pull you over.

Listen to what you just told us,you knew your license was suspended, yet you were out driving. The law is for everybody,to drive we must have a legal license to do so.Now they caught you and you want us to feel like you were mistreated, get real.I don't agree with all the laws but I never made them and I abide by them because that is the law.If you wear the blister on your hind-end then you are the one that has to sit on it,don't try that poor me on the rest of us.I work, pay taxes, support my family, and abide by the laws so should you.

Yes, he's allowed to run your tag.
Random tag checks facilitates detection of stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, felons with outstanding warrants . . .
Once your license came back suspended, he has the right to pull you over.
