Her mother doesn't seem to care. How can I help her? Is that weight normal for a 13 year old?

Set a plan with her.

Tell her that you love her, but you're worried for her health, and if she's willing, you'll help her.

Start with the types of food she eats, then with portion control and physical activity. She's still growing, so nutrition is important, but with balance, she will soon start shedding the weight and reversing some of the unhealthy effects of her obesity.

An easy plan:
Stock up on Slim Fast (the orginal, not the one with sucralose). Start slowly, by replacing breakfast with one shake and a bowl of cereal. (1 cup)
A snack of one cup of fruit in between lunch and breakfast. (1 cup)
Lunch is a can of slim fast and some cottage cheese, or some chicken salad (less than 1 cup)

Snack is veggies, or fruit leather.

Dinner is Fish, chicken or soup (not-breaded and low sodium), veggies and Milk. with no more than 1/2 cup of dessert.

As the appetite weans, remove the food from breakfast and lunch, but keep dinner the same.

When she gets to about 145, remove the slim fast, but keep eating habits the same. (as in, eat the portioned food instead of the shake)

145 should be the target weight right now; and after that, you can focus on 135, but don't obsess; it's going to take the body awhile to heal the damage done. Just keep eating healthy! (No fried foods! and no breaded foods. No more soda!)

Drink plenty of water and try games such as Dance, Dance, Revolution to keep her entertained; although it might be hard for her to play until she drops to at least 160. (set it as a goal, but meanwhile, walk about a mile a day)

No, that weight isn't normal for a 13 yr. old. I would suggest having her father take her to the doctor's for some blood tests to see if she has a thyroid issue and maybe put on some sort of diet.. If her mother doesn't care- then the father may have to step in and co-parent.. If she's visiting you try to engage her into exercise (walking, bike riding, swimming) and fix healthy meals not only for her, but everyone in the family.. Keep sweet juice drinks and soda to a min. and opt for water or sugar free products like Crystal Light... good luck

I am only an inch taller, and about the same weight. I am also 13. I'm a little on the fat side. Maybe I have muscle, though, because there is this girl who looks fatter at me in school, and is taller than me, and is only 140. She's my age, too. I'm not too fat, though. I'm strong, though. Definitely over-weight. Asthma medicines did it to me :(.

It's hard to lose weight, too. I barely eat, because I don't get hungry as much. I do exercise sometimes, too. I'm trying to get more exercise.

Does she look extremely over-weight? Maybe it's muscle?

We often see hypothyroid symptoms totally reversed when commits to a plan that supports balance through nutrition and daily self-care. Learn here https://tr.im/2dr9L

Consume foods naturally high in B vitamins, such as whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and iodine (fish, seaweed, vegetables and root vegetables).
Exercise daily, at least 30–60 minutes per day, 4–5 times a week.
Practice deep breathing and other techniques that trigger the “relaxation response” – such as meditation and guided visualization.

I'm 13 years old and I'm 5'3 too. But I weigh 102lbs. I pretty sure the normal weight for that is 105 -120lbs.

that weight is not normal for anyone unless they are over 6 feet tall or a man.
she needs diet and excercise.
maybe you can start walking with her when you see her. it can be something the two of you can do together. don't let her know it's cause she is fat. just say that you want to start excercising more and need a companion!
and make healthy meals.

Odds are you're eating too fast. Try holding a conversation while wearing a meal so you're not necessarily gulping down more than you need to feel full.

i am the same age and the same height, but i am only 130 pounds and that is still not normal for a 13 year old. wat u should do it talk to the dad and organize family outting such as swimming, jogging, or maybe joining YMCA. then u shoudl thinka bout wat u make in the kitchen for ur stepdaughter to eat. try to find recipes online that help somebody lose weight and make sure u talk to the mom about this and tell her to do the same. Also dont pressure ur stepdaughter to lose a lot of weight at once. she will feel much better that u are helping her and that u are not pressuring her to lose a lot of weight at once

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Read here https://tr.im/iaHqZ
Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.

Beware of "fat-free" or "zero trans fats" foods as you're likely to be trading fats for huge degrees of sugar or sodium.
