I'm just trying to find the bright side to this quagmire in Iraq.

Hmm, well behind the facetiousness I can see your point, and sort of sympathize with it. I think first off, we have to quit with this notion that the troops are the ones to blame for this war. A recent poll was conducted last year saying that 70% of US troops in Iraq wanted to come home in 2006, last year. And were beginning to see the nascent GI resistance movement flourish as well, with more and more military personnel becoming more disillusioned with this horrible war.
The troops are pretty much just fighting either for a college education or job training. If you were to conduct a consensus right now on what was the top reason for anyone to enlist into the military, they wouldnt say because "I wanted to overthrow Saddam Hussein". Theyre not going to see any oil contracts out of this war. Theyre not going to see any money from contractors like Halliburton and all. They dont know what theyre fighting for anymore, theyre just trying to stay alive. So with that said, I think we need to sympathize with them and fight for their right to come back home as soon as possible. Not demonize them.

Ah... the 'ol "Q" word.

We can win this war with the support of the public. Plain and simple. Without that support, the war will go the way of Vietnam. I don't mean putting a bumper sticker on your car, either. Or sending letters to your congressman moaning about how "our boys are dying over there for oil".

Support for our troops means allowing them to finish the mission. The mission THEY believe in. The mission THEY think we can win. The mission THEY believe in misreported by the media.

The problem of Vietnam was the draft. Tens of thousands of young men were sent to fight a war they did not believe in, ask for, or volunteer to be a part of.

Cut to present day. The problems of Vietnam were solved by an all-volunteer force. Our young men and women join the service with the understanding that their purpose is to fight. They understand that this is a responsibility they are taking willingly and, although they may not agree with the reasons, they would follow orders. Ironically, unlike Vietnam, the vast majority of our troops do believe in the war. They do feel we can succeed and that we are making progress. Even many that don't necessarily agree with the reasons for the war believe in upholding their oaths to serve.

The thing that hasn't changed is the American public. The disconnect between the public and the military is a consequence of the all-volunteer force. No longer is there a feeling of shared-sacrifice. Most folks only know one or two people "over there". The rest of us go about our lives as if nothing is going on. Aside from catching a glimpse of the body count or daily death toll scrolling across the ticker on CNN, we live without any real impact from the war.

There was no "soldier class" in WW2. It was us against them. For the highest stakes imaginable. Now, it seems almost obvious to most people. The largest impact they see is the increasing body count. The way to stop the bleeding is to withdraw our troops. My life hasn't changed since the beginning of the war - why should it change if we retreat. There isn't the great evil that the Nazis represented. Heck, we haven't even had a terrorist attack since when - 9/11. That was in 2001; almost six years ago. Let's get over it and get on with our lives.

The problem is that there will be no end. The terrorists will still try and attack us. They will still hate us. Viciously. And there's the disconnect. The troops understand what we are fighting for. The public doesn't. As long as they can stop at a gas station, fill up on $2.75 / gal gasoline and stop by Starbucks on their way home - why should they care? And let's not forget. They've already got that ubiquitous "Support the Troops" sticker on the bumper of their SUV.

You're the reason the country is turning into such a ****-hole, not the troops in Iraq. Maybe instead of crouching in your utopian leftist idealist fantasy land (or college dorm), you need to look at the rest of your fellow americans as HUMAN BEINGS, not political opponents, you douche. A sad but true evaluation of your beliefs:
You're hard on fetuses, and soft on terrorism. What a just system you live by, and I really pity you as you're true scum. Grow up, or evolve into something more useful to society, like a suicide bomber. At least then you'll be dead.

Good news is liberals have aborted more future liberals this year than the entire sum of all the forces that have ever been to Iraq. Republicans have killed off a bunch more liberals via the death penalty, and the remaining libs are unable to procreate because they are queer. Libs should be supporting war to level the playing field, if your theory is accurate.

To quote Black Hawk Down

"Once those bullets start flying past your head, politics go right out the window"

You think the bright side to Iraq is that people who disagree with you politically are going to be killed? Wow, do you consider yourself a tolerant liberal?

Cause you sound like a douche bag to me.

Abortion balances it out on the liberal side. It's called the Roe effect. Actually the insurgency isn't very good at killing U.S. troops. In 2006 the Iraqi death rate per 1,000 was half that of Germany and Italy.Water kills about 3,000 British children a year and trees kill about 5,000 U.S. lumberjacks a year.

I am "liberal" in the opinion of many, and I find this question utterly offensive. Please Grow UP. We cannot justly criticize mindless conservative rhetoric which says we "hate America" and then respond with drivel like this.

Oh, and "Sweetpea"- your answer is just as childish and offensive.

That was a theory with England as well. The best and brightest were killed off in WWII and it left the dregs and morons to create a socialist nanny state.

But hey, you just keep on keeping on with that "supporting the troops" thing.

Now can we call you traitor, or do we have to wait for the question to expire?

(PS, it looks like you're about done here. You have ruined any and all credibility in one fell swoop. Enjoy!)
