Ironically, Colonel Robert E. Lee (later Commanding general of the Army of Northern Virginia) captured John Brown. Judge Parker sentenced Brown to hang. Later, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote that "John Brown was justly hanged."

True. Unsuccessful attempt and he was hung. However, interesting side note, in many black homes after the Civil War portraits of Lincoln and Brown were hung with pictures of Jesus.
