Throughout history, stories have been created to envoke fear and panic. From stories about Vampires and Mad Scientists, to stories about Aliens and witches, what is the attraction?

It allows people to experience fear in a safe environment where -- no matter how scared they get -- it's "just a story/movie". Most of the things you mentioned stem from people's fear of the unknown, from mad scientists to aliens; storytelling about it removes some of the fear by allowing people to experience it.

Everyone loves a good story, especially scary ones. When you know you're in a safe place, it's fine to be scared of films and books. Just think what it would be like if you didn't get afraid. It would actually be pretty boring, even if someone shouting boo makes you scream your head off. It's also the fact of the unknown, that makes you want to find out more, and curiosity leads you there. Let's put it in an easier way. Everyone loves sweets, chocolate and biscuits. So many people break their diet because what you don't have makes you want it even more than it should. It's the same with horror, because you don't quite know what's around the corner, but you want to find out.

If you are afraid of something, you know a way to cause fear in others and this appears to give you a modicum of power. This has been used in religions for as long as they have existed. Today, this is especially relevant in the Christian and Muslim religions proselytizing and debating.
