try throttling it down before it is turned off, less fuel in exhaust that way... might help... cant hurt

a backfire normally occures when droplets of fuel ignite in the exhaust pipe this means to much fuel is passing through the carb also preignition motor running on after turned off points to a worn or a corroded spark plug

it's running rich, and you shut it off too quick. Let it idle for a couple of minutes before you shut it off. If it still backfires, slow the idle setting a little, if it still does,you need to lean out the fuel air mix a little, If you don't know how, just have a mechanic do it.

Try using higher octane gas in it. I'm using premium in mine now and it's running a lot better. You may also need to change spark plugs, oil etc.
